The Shader Croft School is partnering with Champlain Valley School District and Winooski Middle/High School this summer and is looking for interested educators

Description of program:  Shader Croft is a small summer program that focuses on developing the literacy skills of reading fluency and comprehension, written expression and oral expression, for at-risk middle school students and ELL students. The program is student centered, community based and experiential. More details about the program can be found at

This is a special program that engages students by inviting them to plan trips into the community based on their interests and uses those experiences to facilitate the instruction of the various literacy skills. The student group size is twelve, with four instructors, but travel into the community is in smaller groups. It is a model that has proven effective based on independent program evaluation, as well as documented feedback from students, parents and educators.

 Skills Needed:  We are looking for enthusiastic licensed educators to provide the literacy instruction.  We are also looking for youth oriented adults to support and guide students through the trip planning process.  All instruction and planning is conducted in a small group format to at-risk middle school students and ELL middle and high school students.  Instructional experience or training in any of the following areas is preferred:  reading, language arts, special education, ELL, speech and language, student activities, student behavior planning. Other certifications will be considered. You will work as part of a teaching/instructional team. As this is a summer program, a willingness to hangout and be with young adolescents is a must.

Logistics:  This is a five-week program that meets four days a week, for a total of 20 teaching days.  There are an additional two days of pre-service during May and June, and a half-day of post-service to complete reports. The program hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Program Location and Dates:  The program will take place at two locations:

  • Champlain Valley School District – The specific Monday – Thursday five weeks are still TBD.           The program will begin no earlier than June 21, 2021, and end no later than August 5, 2021.
  • Winooski Middle/High School  – Winooski, VT               Monday – Thursday, June 21 – July 22, 2021
